IN-DEPTH GUIDE // IP GEOLOCATION, BGP ROUTING & ASN ARCHITECTURE
Understanding Autonomous System Numbers, IP routing tables, Regional Internet Registries, and carrier infrastructure.
What is an Autonomous System Number (ASN)?
The global Internet is composed of tens of thousands of independently operated networks known as Autonomous Systems (AS). Each network (ranging from major telecommunications carriers to cloud providers like Cloudflare, Google, and Amazon) is assigned a globally unique 16-bit or 32-bit identifier known as an ASN by Regional Internet Registries (RIRs: ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC).
Using the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), autonomous systems announce blocks of IP prefixes (CIDRs) to establish optimal packet transmission paths across the global fiber backbone.
How IP Geolocation Operates
IP addresses themselves do not contain GPS coordinates. Geolocation databases aggregate multi-source telemetry including RIR delegation records, latency triangulation, Wi-Fi BSSID beacons, and carrier routing nodes to map IP blocks to geographic coordinates.
While country and city-level lookups are highly accurate, coordinate mapping points to the network carrier's local routing center rather than a user's exact physical doorstep, preserving personal physical privacy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my location show an adjacent city?
Broadband and cellular ISPs route subscriber traffic through central regional gateway switches. The IP database reflects the location of that carrier gateway facility.
Does this lookup require an API key?
Zero keys. The tool leverages keyless, open CORS-compliant GeoIP APIs directly from your client browser thread without requiring account registration.
Can I query domain names as well as IPs?
Yes. You can supply domain hostnames (such as cloudflare.com or github.com); the DNS resolution will occur automatically during probe execution.
Are my queries logged by sarwarfx?
Never. CyberTools operates under strict airgap zero-logging principles. Inquiries are transmitted directly between your browser and the public GeoIP endpoint.
