DECIBEL SPECTRUM // FAST FOURIER TRANSFORM (FFT) & ACOUSTIC TELEMETRY
Technical specifications of W3C Web Audio API audio graphs, frequency binning physics, and dBFS measurement standards.
Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Mechanics
Microphone diagnostics convert continuous air pressure waves into discrete frequency band distributions using the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm:
- AnalyserNode Window: Configured with an
fftSizeof 2048, yielding 1024 individual frequency bins spanning from 0 Hz up to the Nyquist frequency (half the sample rate, e.g. 24,000 Hz). - Spectral Energy: Real-time amplitudes are quantified between 0 and 255 per bin, rendering a visual spectral fingerprint of your vocal cords or room ambient noise.
Decibels Relative to Full Scale (dBFS)
Unlike acoustic sound pressure level (dBSPL), digital audio measures volume relative to the maximum possible level before distortion:
- 0 dBFS Threshold: The absolute digital ceiling. Any amplitude exceeding this produces harsh flat-topped waveform clipping.
- RMS Power: Root Mean Square averaging smooths instantaneous peaks to accurately represent perceived human acoustic loudness.
Airgap Zero-Log Privacy Architecture
The Decibel Spectrum diagnostic analyzes audio buffers in transient RAM without saving recordings to disk or streaming raw audio over the network. Muting the mic immediately terminates the audio graph.
