W3C BATTERY STATUS API SPECIFICATION, DISCHARGE CURVES & SENSOR PRIVACY

Technical specifications for W3C Battery Status API, Chromium sensor protocols, battery drain calculation, and client privacy.

1. Architecture of the W3C Battery Status API

Standardized under W3C candidate recommendations, the Battery Status API exposes a promise-based navigator.getBattery() method returning a BatteryManager interface with four core telemetry properties:

  • charging (Boolean): Declares whether the device is receiving electricity via an external AC adapter or USB-C power delivery bus.
  • chargingTime (Seconds): Remaining duration until the battery reaches 100% capacity. Returns 0 when full or Infinity when unplugged.
  • dischargingTime (Seconds): Remaining duration until total depletion. Returns Infinity when plugged in.
  • level (Float): Normalized percentage between 0.0 (empty) and 1.0 (fully charged).

2. Modern Browser Privacy & Fingerprinting Considerations

In 2015, security researchers demonstrated that ultra-precise battery level floats (such as 0.5843198) combined with discharge rates could serve as temporary cross-site device fingerprints. Consequently, modern Chromium engines round battery levels and throttle update intervals to protect user anonymity while preserving utility for performance throttling and background sync.

1. Airgapped Safety 100% in-browser query. No battery telemetry, serial numbers, or charging records are transmitted to any remote servers.
2. Hardware Event Listeners Subscribes to native OS kernel interrupt notifications to refresh HUD counters precisely when charging state alters.
3. Universal Simulation Mode Integrated test simulator activates seamlessly on desktop workstations or browsers lacking physical battery hardware.
