Euclidean Greatest Common Divisor
To express the aspect ratio of two pixel dimensions (such as 1920 and 1080) in lowest integer terms, the Euclidean algorithm determines the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). By iteratively replacing the larger number by the remainder of dividing the larger by the smaller:
GCD(1920, 1080) = 120
Dividing both numbers by 120 yields the canonical proportion 16:9.
Zero-Artifact Client Calculation
When scaling assets for responsive layouts, video encoding, or game development, locking the aspect ratio guarantees that fractional pixels do not introduce blurred sub-pixel rendering. All calculations execute instantly within browser memory with zero network dependencies.
